TEXAS FAITH: When is it okay to apply moral absolutes to public policy?

Filed Under (Reigion Gossip) by Admin on 03-08-2011

The Religious Right and the Tea Party are often viewed as separate groups, but that’s not exactly true. There are libertarian-minded Tea Party advocates who care only about fiscal issues. And there are social conservatives for whom abortion, gay marriage and religious expression are most important. But there is considerable overlap. Many social conservatives embrace the Tea Party agenda. Call them “Teavangelicals.”

Should Rupert Murdoch resign?

That has been one of the top questions swirling around the breathtaking scandal unfolding in Murdoch’s media empire in Great Britain. He has apologized for the phone hacking that some of his employees engaged in or knew about. But Murdoch made clear to Parliament last week that he was going nowhere.

TEXAS FAITH: Are Perry and Obama responsible for the religious company they keep?

Filed Under (Reigion Gossip) by Admin on 13-07-2011

Opponents of Barack Obama sought to tie him to some of the more controversial ideas of his minister, Jeremiah Wright. Now some critics of Gov. Rick Perry are doing something similar — raising questions about the religious views of some organizers of Perry’s Christian prayer summit in Houston next month. Perry has invited the public and his fellow governors to attend the “day of prayer and fasting for our troubled nation” at Reliant Stadium on Aug. 6. Sponsors represent a range of Christian views, but some clearly are outside the mainstream. For example, the event is being sponsored by the American Family Association, whose spokesman has said homosexuals founded the Nazi Party. One of the sponsors, Colorado evangelical C. Peter Wagner, has advocated burning the statues of Catholic saints and other non-Protestant religious objects. San Antonio megapastor John Hagee preaches an end-times theology that advocates bombing Iran. Oklahoma City evangelist John Benefiel says the Statue of Liberty is “a demonic idol.”

Rick Perry and the megapastors: Don’t count on him to reject endorsements

Filed Under (Reigion Gossip) by Admin on 10-07-2011

Three years ago, GOP presidential hopeful John McCain accepted, then rejected, an endorsement from San Antonio megapastor John Hagee. Don’t expect Rick Perry to do the same if he runs. Hagee has said that Hitler was God’s instrument to create a Jewish state, that the Catholic church is the “whore of Babylon” and he preaches an end-times theology that anticipates bombing Iran. But Perry knows Hagee and has visited his church. And Hagee is scheduled to appear at Perry’s Christian prayer summit on August 6 in Houston.

TEXAS FAITH: Anthony Weiner and Internet ethics

Filed Under (Reigion Gossip) by Admin on 15-06-2011

By now, we all know more about Democratic Rep. Anthony Weiner’s online habits than we probably care to know.
