Gov. Rick Perry has invited his 49 fellow governors to join him later this summer for a day of prayer and fasting for “our troubled country.” In a letter to his colleagues, Perry said leaders should call on God to provide “spiritual solutions to the many challenges we face in our communities, states and nation.”

I had wanted to avoid the May 21st rapture debate because it seemed like so much of a chip shot. Even many who believe in one form or another of end-times theology have disagreed with the prediction of Harold Camping of the Family Radio Network. He’s the fellow that predicted Judgment Day was to come Saturday. (As I understand it, Camping, a civil engineer, reached that conclusion by pegging May 21 to being exactly 7,000 years after Noah got caught in a flood.)

Schools are in the news with K-12 budget cuts the talk of the day across Texas, and Washington debating whether to trim Pell Grants and other forms of higher education spending. And there are plenty of discussions going on in Texas and nationally about getting better teachers into classrooms, expanding the number of charter schools and updating the No Child Left Behind Act.

The U.S. Supreme Court last week agreed to hear a case about the legal protections afforded religious organizations from anti-discrimination laws when it comes to hiring their own clergy and employees. Employment is just one area where churches sometimes are treated differently than secular organizations in civil courts. There are property disputes, for example. Zoning issues. An employer’s responsibility for an employee’s actions. The Pew Research Center’s Forum on Religion & Public Life examines all this in a new report.
